Stat Sheet Stuffer of the Weekend:
Caron Bulter, Washington vs. L.A. Lakers - 17 pts, 12 rebs, 12 asts, 3 3pt fgm and 2 stls.
Friday's Action:
NBA Game of the Night:
Boston 112 New Orleans 92.
The Boston Celtics came into the game against the Hornets defeating
every team in the NBA except New Orleans. In a season in which they have
smashed seemingly everything in their path the C's of course would have
no problem leaving the boys from Burbon Street the same way the left
every other team at one point this season ... defeated, dejected,
frustrated and in awe. Paul Pierce led the green with 27 points and 9
assist and also included a sintilating 13-13 from the foul line. The
Celtics erased a 4 point halftime deficit to win going away.
With their 57th win the C's set the team record for the biggest single
season win differential from the previous season. Last season the
pathetic green won only 24 games.
Phoenix 107 Philadelphia 93.
The Sixers welcomed the Suns to the city of brotherly love having won 6
of their past 7. But Nash and his boys are a horse of a different color
and wasted no time jumping all over the Sixers going up by 19 after 1
quarter. Game. Set. Thank you all for coming.
Memphis 114 L.A. Lakers 111.
The Memphis Grizzlies are among the worst teams in the NBA and the
Lakers are supposedly among the best. With a 53 point effort from the
Mamba there is no way Memphis should beat L.A. in L.A. or anywhere else
on planet earth or any other planet in our solar system. MVP's do not
lose to teams fighting for the # 1 overall pick. With Bynum out, Pau
still recovering from a badly sprained ankle and the recent revelation
of Derek Fishers foot tear, L.A. may not be able to hold up in the wild,
wild west playoffs.
Sweet 16 Action:
Davidson 73 Wisconsin 56.
Stephen Curry scored 33 points, 22 in the second half and through 3
games he has scored 103 points, 2nd most in NCAA tournement history to
lead 10th seeded Davidson to the Sweet16. Curry has been the best player
in the tournament and is now 1 of 4 playersin history to score more than
30 points in each of his 1st 4 tourney games.
Also of note is while Curry scored 22 points in the second half, the
entire Wisconsin team had 20. WOW ...
Elsewhere:
The favorites won big; Texas by 20, Kansas by 15 and Memphis led by 30
at the half and cruised to the 19 point win.
Friday's Finest:
Carlos Boozer, Utah - 34 pts, 17 rebs, 3 asts & 2 stls.
Saturdays Action:
NBA Game of the Night:
Denver 119 Golden State 112.
Denver took over the the 8th spot in the Western Conference playoff race
by beating the Warriors. Kenyon Martin scored 30 points and grabbed 11
rebounds to lead the way in a huge win for the streaking Nuggets who
have won 5 in a row.
Saturday's Star:
Al Thornton, L.A. Clippers - 39 pts, 3 rebs and 2 asts.
Elite 8 Action:
UCLA 76 Xavier 57.
The Bruins had way too much talent and way too many weapons for Xavier
to handle. I predicted UCLA to win it all in my bracket challenge on
cbssportsline.com so I UNDERSTOOD them already but they were even more
impressive than I thought against Xavier. Kevin Love and Darren Collison
each had 19 points to lead the romp.
North Carolina 83 Louisville 73.
Psycho Hansborough scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Tar
Heels hung tough down the stretch against a game Cardinal team.
Sunday's Action:
NBA Match-up of the Day:
San Antonio 109 Houston 88.
At the end of quarter 1 the Spurs owned a 35-24 lead after shooting 71%
from the field. Tony Parker led the way with 12 points on 5-6 shooting
from the field in the first frame and Tim Duncan chipped in with 6
points and 3 rebounds.
Tracy McGrady had 3 dunks thru 11 minutes remaining in the 1st half and
ALL three were in traffic including an and 1 over a stationary Jacque
Vaughn. At the half S.A. held an 18 point lead thanks to over 60%
shooting and this game was a wrap. Mike Finley led the way for the
defending champions with 22 points on 9-13 shooting. A couple weeks ago
the Spurs had lost 6 of 7 and were considered to old and slow to compete
in this wild, wild west ... 7 wins in a row, they are being UNDERSTOOD.
Elite 8 Action:
Memphis 85 Texas 67.
Derick Rose got off to a scortching hot start scoring 10 of Memphis
first 30 opoints and the Tigers led by double figures throughout the
rest of the half. At the end of 1/2 one it was 39 to 28. Texas stand out
point guard DJ Augustine was flustered into 1-7 fg and 4 turnovers, but
he did lead his team with 7 points. Texas came out with a 6 zip run to
cut the lead to 5, at 39-34. Memphis followed with a 7 nothing run of
their own and never looked back. Rose scored 21 points and added 6
rebounds and 9 assists to lead the way for the Tigers.
Kansas 59 Davidson 57.
Both teams started out 1-6 from the field and it was evident that
defense was the name of the game early. With a little over 11 minutes
left in the first half Davidson point man Richards drove to the lane and
gave Davidson a 9-6 lead. Things started to heat up around the 9 minute
mark which saw 8 quick points from Davidson stud Stephan Curry.with 7:56
left in the first half Davidson led 17-16. At the half Kansas held a
30-28 advantage despite 15 first half points from Curry.
This game came down to the very last play and Davidsons best player had
the ball in his hands with the game hanging gently in the balance.
Instead of hoisting a contested 3, which noone would have blamed him for
shooting, Curry made the right play and his teammate missed wildy and
Kansas escaped with their 2 point lives. March Madness giveth and it
taketh away ... all in one fell swoop.
Sundays Stud:
Ron Artest, Sacramento - 29 pts, 12 rebs, 4 stls, 3 asts and 2 blks.
