(prior rank) Team Record
(2) Boston (49-12) The Boston Celtics have added veterans P.J. Brown and Sam Cassell to solidify their already strong bench. The Celtics have won eight in a row and continue to lead the league in point differential at an unbelievable 10.3 points per game. They were also the first team to clinch a playoff berth.
(6) Houston (42-20) The Rockets are the hottest team in the NBA. They have won 18 games in a row and the streak looks like it will continue with games this week against New Jersey, Atlanta and at Charlotte. Sunday brings a true test to the streak when the Lakers come into town. The Rockets have won their last nine games by double digits.
(3) LA Lakers (44-19) The Lakers lost at home to the Kings, which puts them, only a ½ game ahead of the San Antonio Spurs for 1st place in the conference. Kobe Bryant only scored 1 point in the entire fourth quarter in the 114 to 113 loss.
(4) Detroit (46-17) Pistons were never in the game against the Celtics on Wednesday night and allowed the Celtics to take the season series 2 games to 1. The Pistons were able to rebound from the loss by getting past the Knicks and the Bulls.
(5) New Orleans (42-20) Chris Paul’s 37 points and 11 assists wasn’t enough to get past the Houston Rockets. The Hornets have a nightmare week ahead with San Antonio, LA Lakers and then they face Detroit Sunday, on national television.
(8) Utah (42-22) The Jazz have won five in a row and got a big victory over the division rival Nuggets. Mehmut Okur has averaged 20.8 ppg and 11.8 rpg during this current streak.
(9) Phoenix (41-22) Phoenix finally got a respectable win with Shaquille O’Neal in the lineup with a 94-87 victory over the Spurs. The win keeps the Suns ahead of the Dallas Mavericks by one game for the 6th seed out West.
(1) San Antonio (42-20) San Antonio is on a two game losing streak after losses to Denver and Phoenix. They have a chance to get some revenge against the Nuggets who they play tonight on NBA TV but won’t face the Suns again until April 9th.
(11) Golden State (39-23) The Warriors have won six out of their last seven games and have a solid two game lead over Denver for the 8th spot in West and they are only a 1/2 game behind the Dallas Mavericks for the 7th spot.
(10) Orlando (40-24) The Magic won games last week against the heartless Knicks, the Bosh-less Raptors and the Arenas-Butler less Wizards but failed to win against the Warriors.
(7) Dallas (40-23) Dallas is lucky they haven’t slipped further down in the rankings after losing consecutive games to the Lakers, Jazz and Rockets. They won on Saturday against the Nets and have a favorable schedule this week with home games against the Knicks, Bobcats and Pacers.
(14) Cleveland (36-27) Over the last five games Lebron James has been on a tear averaging 38.8 ppg, 7.2 rpg and 6.6 apg. The East coast playoffs won’t really start until the second round and Boston should be concerned with the idea having to go thru Lebron.
(12) Denver (37-25) Denver really needed to win against Utah on Saturday but got blown out instead. They slipped further out of the playoff race in the West after victories against Phoenix and Utah over the weekend.
(13) Toronto (34-28) Toronto has struggled without their All-Star forward Chris Bosh who is out with a knee injury but they still managed to get wins over the Heat and Sonics last week. Bosh is expected to return this week.
(15) Portland (33-30) The Trailblazers lost to Phoenix to start the week but ended the week well with road victories against the Bucks and Knicks. They continue their road trip with games against the Cavaliers, Timberwolves and Kings before returning home Saturday to face the Wolves again.
