NBA Power Rankings
By the Gentleman

There were no Power Rankings last week because I was to busy jinxing the New England Patriots by going home to Massachusetts to watch the game. I should have stayed in Cali and watched the game. A lot has happened since I did the last power rankings Pau Gasol, Shaquille O’Neal and Shawn Marion all changed uniforms. Garnett has been injured for the Celtics but they still had no problem getting past the defending champs this past weekend.
Rank
(Last week) Team Record
1(1) Boston (39-9) Kevin Garnett has missed seven games with an abdominal strain and the Celtics have gone 5-2 in those contests, including Sunday’s game against the defending Champion San Antonio Spurs. The Celtics showed the world they have a guy who can defend Tim Duncan in Glen “Big Baby” Davis. The Celtics improved to 16-0 against the West.
2(5) Phoenix (36-15) Phoenix moves up three spots for acquiring Shaquille O’Neal. I think this trade works because the Suns wouldn’t have had anybody who could guard Tim Duncan or Andrew Bynum. In the playoffs the game slows down a bit and when it does Shaq will be able to defend the paint.
3(7) LA Lakers (33-17) Pau Gasol is a Laker and you have to give Mitch Kupchuk a ton of credit for pulling this deal off. This trade gives the Lakers arguably the best starting five in the NBA. Lamar Odom 6’10’, Gasol 7’2’ and Andrew Bynum 7’0’ will be a formidable frontline heading into the playoffs.
4(4) Detroit (37-13) Rasheed Wallace was named as Kevin Garnett’s replacement for the All-Star Game. I wonder whether he will even show up as he previously stated that he enjoys the time off. The Pistons have won 8 in a row and face the Hawks and Pacers this week.
5(2) New Orleans (34-15) Chris Paul scored 42 points last Wednesday to get past the Phoenix Suns in overtime, that victory was New Orleans third this season over Phoenix. New Orleans goes on the road to face Chicago and Milwaukee this week.
6(3) Dallas (34-16) With the rest of the West making moves to improve their squads, the pressure is on for Mavs management.
7(6) San Antonio (32-17) Tim Duncan lost for the first time ever in Boston on Sunday despite the absence of Kevin Garnett for the Celtics.
8(12) Utah (33-19) Utah won its 10th game in a row this week after defeating the Nuggets, they followed that victory up by losing to the Kings and then defeating the Bulls. The Jazz have won 17 out their 20 games since acquiring Kyle Korver.
9(8) Orlando (32-20) J.J. Redick wants to be traded and I can’t really blame him. He hasn’t been given an opportunity to develop as a professional and the guys who play ahead of him are Keith Bogans and Maurice Evans. You have to ask yourself do they really have more potential then Redick???????
10(9) Denver (31-19) Carmelo Anthony netted his career high last week with 49 points against the Washington Wizards on 19-25 shooting, on Sunday he got the best of Lebron and the Cavs going for 27 points and getting the Nuggets the victory.
11(15) Houston (30-20) The Rockets have won 6 in a row, and are still tied with the Golden State Warriors for the eighth spot in the West.
12(11) Golden State (30-20) The Warriors lead the league in points allowed at 107.1 per game but they score the second most points in the league at 109.5ppg. They were unable to outscore Chicago last Thursday despite the Bulls being without Luol Deng, Kirk Hinrich and Ben Gordon.
13(16) Cleveland (28-22) Lebron is younger then one-third of the NBA’s rookies, that is just frightening but that didn’t matter on Sunday when the Cavs were blown out in their own gym against the Nuggets.
14(10) Portland (28-22) Portland has cooled off quite a bit losing, understandably, to the Detroit Pistons but the Pacers? Blazers have won ONLY four of their last ten.
15(13) Toronto (27-22) T.J. Ford had his best game against since returning from the injury he suffered at the hands of Al Horford. In 22 minutes on Sunday Ford scored 7 points and dished out 13 assists.
