(prior rank) Team Record
(2) Houston (46-20) The Rockets should have been number one last week but I was being a little stubborn. They are on the second longest winning streak in NBA history with 22 wins in a row. Rafer Alston scored a career-high 31 points for the Rockets to get past the Lakers and keep the streak alive. They now face the Celtics, Hornets, Warriors and Suns this week.
(1) Boston (52-13) The Jazz ended the Celtics 10-game winning streak on Friday but the Celtics were able to get past the lowly Bucks on Saturday. The Celtics are on the road this week with games against the Spurs, Rockets, Mavericks and Hornets.
(4) Detroit (48-18) Detroit had no problem getting past the Hornets 105 - 84 on Sunday. Jarvis Hayes scored 29 points and was 7 for 8 from behind the 3-point line. Detroit has won four of out of their last five games.
(5) New Orleans (44-21) New Orleans blew out San Antonio and got past the Lakers last week but with Chris Paul ailing from ankle injury the Hornets lost to the Pistons. The Hornets are home this week with the Bulls, Rockets and Celtics coming to the Big Easy.
(3) LA Lakers (45-21) Pau Gasol sprained his ankle Friday against the New Orleans Hornets and the Lakers dropped two without Pau. The Lakers will miss Gasol this week with games against the Mavericks and the Jazz.
(7) Phoenix (44-22) Phoenix has won their last four games and Amare Stoudemire has averaged 27.8ppg, 11.3rpg and 2blks during the stretch. The Suns play Portland and Seattle before returning home to play the Rockets on Saturday.
(6) Utah (44-24) After getting revenge against the Boston Celtics, the last team to beat the Jazz at home, Utah lost a heartbreaker in New Jersey. The Jazz will play their next five at home.
(10) Orlando (44-24) Orlando has won seven of their last eight games and play their next four games against the East’s playoff hopefuls; Cavaliers, Wizards, 76ers and Hawks.
(11) Dallas (44-23) We will get to see if the Mavericks are for real, they have won five games in a row but this week they face the Lakers, Celtics and the Spurs.
(9) Golden State (41-24) The Warriors lost in Phoenix Thursday but have won eight out of their last ten games. Monta Ellis is averaging 22.4ppg, 6.9rpg and 4.0apg in the month of March.
(8) San Antonio (44-22) Although last week’s schedule was pretty tough for the Spurs, I wouldn’t have expected them to lose three straight to the Hornets, Pistons and 76ers.
(13) Denver (40-26) The Nuggets are embarking on a five game road trip against the Pistons, 76ers, Nets, Raptors, and Grizzlies. The Nuggets are going to have to go at least four and one on this trip if they hope to stay in the playoff race in the West as they are currently a game and half out of the eighth spot.
(15) Portland (35-32) They went 2 and 2 last week but they got Greg Oden back in practice and that is great news for Portland as Greg will be a solid addition to this already dangerous team.
(17) Washington (33-32) Washington is on a three game winning streak. Antawn Jamison made a three pointer to send the game against the Clippers into overtime where they outscored the Clippers 19 to 9 to get the win.
(16) Philadelphia (33-34) The 76ers beat Detroit on the road and San Antonio at home last week. They would be as high as 12th in this ranking but they still aren’t even over .500. The 76ers are 15-4 in their last 19 games.
(12) Cleveland (38-29) Lebron is making a valiant push for MVP averaging 36.0ppg, 7.9rpg and 7.0asts in the month of March. The Cavs lost two games last week and have two big games this week against the Magic and Pistons.
(14) Toronto (34-22) Toronto is struggling without their All-Star Chris Bosh. Bosh has been out with a sore knee since February 29th and the Raps have gone 2 and 8 in his absence.
(21) New Jersey (28-38) The Nets lost every game on their five game West Coast road trip but with two consecutive victories over the Cavs and Jazz at home they are tied with the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth seed in the East.
(19) Atlanta (28-38) The Hawks have some big games this week against the Wizards, Nets and Magic. The Hawks are going to need a solid week if they want to remain tied for the eighth seed and Wednesday’s game against the Nets is a must win.
(18) Sacramento (30-36) Beno Udrih has enjoyed taking over point guard duties for the Kings as he has averaged 17.7ppg and 6.0apg in the month of March.
