Blame It On The Henny
By Harold Menard
12/04/09

Once again Ron Artest has found a new way to make headlines. In a recent interview with The Sporting News, Artest claimed to have drank Hennessey during halftime of games while he was playing for the Chicago Bulls. This statement is just another sad attempt at seeking attention. Back in High School we had a saying for when somebody was telling a story that was either way to over the top or just too perfect. The saying was "I'll let you tell it" hahaha. I'm not really buying Artest's claim. Maybe things in Laker Land have been too easy for him. Artest has a very high basketball IQ and has always been a willing passer so I doubt he would be bothered by averaging 12.4 ppg, which is the lowest he has averaged since his rookie year. Artest has always stated he is about winning and the Lakers currently have the best record in the NBA at 14-3. So I'm guessing he was a bit bored when he made this statement. Maybe there weren't enough reporters gathered at his locker after games. Either way, I'm not buying it.

I often head down to the basketball court on a Sunday afternoon and on many occasions I have seen guys have beer or smoke something in between games and get right back on the court for another game. The difference between the Sunday afternoon pick up game and the NBA game is pace. With the speed and intensity of the NBA game, not to mention all the water and Gatorade that is consumed during a game, if Ron was actually drinking Hennessey at halftime more than likely he would have thrown up in the middle of the game which would have disgusted his teammates, referees and most importantly the fans.

Artest also lost all credibility with the story he shared with reporters after the game 2 loss to the Lakers in last year's Western Conference semifinals. After being ejected, reporters gathered at Artest's locker for his post game comments and he did not disappoint. He told a story about how a young man was killed after a basketball game. Apparently a player on the losing team was so upset after the loss that he broke a leg off a wooded table and threw it at a player on the winning team. The broken table went thru the player's heart and killed him. Word Artest, that it was happened? There was a random wooden table at the basketball court??? "I'll let you tell it". I'm not sure what Ron's mind set was when he was doing the interview or what he was thinking when he made that statement. Maybe he had some Hennessey before the interview. Either way he is going to hear about it for awhile, and he may get a call from David Stern. Whatever back lash comes Ron Artest's way, he can blame it on the al- al- al- al- al- al-Alcohol.
