CAN IVERSON AND THE 76ERS WORK
By Ron Campbell
12/02/09

A homecoming is on the horizon in Philadelphia. The 76ers have offered former franchise player Allen Iverson a one-year non-guaranteed contract and Iverson who played 10 seasons with the Sixers is expected to accept the offer as early as today. So the big question is will this reunion work out. I for one think it will and for the following reasons:

-The Sixers and Iverson need each other

The Sixers need something to save this season. Point guard Lou Williams is out for the next eight weeks and promising forward Mareese Speights is out with a knee ligament tear. Even with Williams and Speights the Sixers were not a good team. The Sixers 104 to 102 loss to the Mavericks on Monday marked their seventh loss in a row. The Sixers record is 5-12 which is pretty bad but what's even worse is two of the wins came against the New Jersey Nets (arguably the worst team in NBA history). The other three wins came against the Bucks, Knicks and Bobcats. Iverson was loved in Philly and if there is one person who can bring respectability back to the 76ers it is Iverson. The way the team is currently structured, is a perfect set up for Iverson which leads me to my second point.

-The 76ers do not have a leader just a bunch of role players

The Elton Brand signing was good but the Achilles injury he suffered prior to the 2007-08 season while he was still a member of the cursed L.A. Clippers may have set him back permanently. Brand has fallen out of favor with Eddie Jordan losing minutes to Speights before his injury. The Sixers don't have a legitimate go to guy just a cast of support players. Andre Igoudola is a very talented player but he does not have the ability to lead a team the way Allen Iverson has already proven he can do. Allen Iverson led the Sixers to the NBA Finals in 2001, he is a 10-time all-star and an MVP.

-The 76ers attendance is down

The Sixers attendance is the worst in the league but SIGN HIM AND THEY WILL COME. Iverson sells tickets wherever he goes and for years his jersey was the hottest selling item in the NBA. The City of brotherly love will graciously welcome Iverson with open arms
