The Indianapolis Colts are 11-0 in the NFL and have a legit chance of being a perfect 16-0 heading into the playoffs. Not to get carried away or anything but would anyone be surprised if the Lakers finished the season 79 and 3. Yeah that is forcing it a bit but a healthy Lakers squad is pretty good and the losses will be few and far between. On to the rankings...
(3)1. LA Lakers (13-3)
Despite the fact that the teams they beat last week had a combined record of 8-41, the Lakers are unbeaten (5-0) with Pau Gasol in the starting line-up and look practically unbeatable.
(4)2. Phoenix (14-3) )
As hot as the Lakers are, the Suns are in 1st place in the Pacific Division. MVP candidate Steve Nash is leading the NBA with a career best 12.1 assists per game.
(7)3. Boston (13-4) )
The Celtics rise from a mini-slump is a direct result of the inspired play from team leader Kevin Garnett who is shooting 81.4% from the field and averaging 18.3 ppg in the C's last 3 games; all wins none the less.
(1)4. Orlando (14-4) )
There is no denying the Magic are a deep and talented team but when they are getting MVP-type production (23.6 ppg and 17.6 rpg) like they have in their last 3 games from Superman Howard; they look like they could be headed for something special.
(6)5. Cleveland (12-5) )
Shaq is an NBA Legend but he just does not appear to be fitting in with Lebron's team. The Cavs are 7-4 when he plays and 5-1 when he does not.
(5)6. Dallas (12-5) )
If the Mavs are 100% healthy come playoff time they will not go away quietly. Their projected starting line-up has been together for a total of just three games. Two of those games were wins by a combined 46 points.
(15)7. San Antonio (9-6) )
San Antonio has the 2nd longest winning streak (5 games) in the NBA. Tim Duncan is averaging a team leading 18.5 ppg and 10.8 rpg this season including 20/10 in 3 of the last 4 games. So much for his demise.
(8)8. Denver (12-5) )
The Nuggets tied a dubious record by becoming the team with the highest winning percentage (.750) to lose to a team who has lost 15 games in a row. They were the first however to do it while suffering their 1st loss at home.
(2)9. Atlanta (12-5) )
In the Hawks last four games (three which were losses) Joe Johnson is shooting .348% from the field and averaging 13.7 ppg. That is absolutely not going to get it done.
(10)10. Portland (12-7) )
After starting the week off with two comfortable wins by and average of 17 ppg, the Blazers were embarrassed at home against the Grizzlies by 10 and destroyed in Utah by 16 to finish the week at 2-2.
(20)11. Utah (9-7) )
Utah is 3-4 on the road this season. Last season they finished 15-26. If this team can get its act together on the road they have a legit shot at the Conference Finals.
(11)12. Miami (9-7) )
Heat fans are in for a topsy turvey season to say the least. This team beat the Orlando Magic on the road Wed. night on a Michael Beasley tip in the closing seconds and was then blown out at home two days later by the Washington Wizards.
(16)13. Oklahoma City (9-8) )
Russ Westbrook got the best of rookie sensation Brandon Jennings in a match-up on Friday night. Westbrook scored 20 points and added 7 assists and 6 rebounds while holding Jennings to 12 points on 3-11 shooting. The Thunder have won 3 of 5 overall.
(12)14. Houston (9-8) )
Carl Landry is carrying the Rockets post game; he is 3rd on the team in scoring (15.9 ppg) and he is shooting a team leading .556% from the field.
(9)15. Milwaukee (8-7) )
After 4 losses in a row and yet another injury DNP for Michael Redd this team has to start looking at life without there longest tenured player. Redd is averaging 9.8 ppg and is shooting a woeful 30% from the field.
(24)16. Charlotte (7-9) )
Gerald Wallace is one of the most underrated players in the NBA. He is averaging 16 points and 12 rebounds per game and should make his 1st All Star team this season.
(13)17. Chicago (6-8) )
If the Bulls are going to build upon last season’s epic playoff performance they are going to have to do better than winning one out of every four road games.
(17)18. Indiana (6-8) )
Just when the Pacers were getting healthy it is reported that Danny Granger may miss time with a knee issue and this team is going absolutely nowhere without his 25 ppg.
(25)19. New Orleans (7-10) )
Rookie guard Marcus Thornton who was taken in 2nd round of last season’s draft is the 4th leading rookie scorer (12.0 ppg) and averages more points per game than teammates Peja Stojakovic and 1st round draft pick Darren Collison.
(22)20. Sacramento (8-8) )
How many of you out there thought the Kings would have a better record than the Wizards through the seasons first 15 games? Rookie of the Year candidate Tyreke Evans is 2nd among all rookies in scoring and 3rd in assists and rebounds.
(23)21. LA Clippers (8-10) )
Team leading scorer (19.5 ppg) Chris Kaman’s' play has tapered off a bit but team leading rebounder (10.2) Marcus Camby has been putting up some monster numbers. In his last 4 games (3 wins) Camby is averaging 15.5 rpg and 3 bpg.
(18)22. Toronto (7-11) )
Chris Bosh is averaging career bests of 25.4 ppg and 12.2 rpg. He is clearly a great player but not good enough to make an impact as the team’s best player.
(27)23. Memphis (6-11) )
The inconsistent Grizzlies have alternated wins and losses in their last 6 games culminating in a 98 to 88 loss in L.A. against the Clippers where they were outscored 33 to 7 in the 4th quarter.
(20)24. Detroit (6-11) )
The Pistons stopped their 7 game losing streak with an impressive win against the Hawks. Will Bynum continues to impress with his dynamic play off the bench averaging a career high 13.9 ppg.
(25)25. Washington (5-10) )
Following a dismal 1-8 stretch the Wizards have won 2 of 3. In those three games Gilbert Arenas is averaging 10.6 ppg. Go figure.
(21)26. Philadelphia (5-12) )
Rumors are circulating faster than a Texans collapse against the Colts that Allen Iverson will be brought back to the one place where he really ever mattered.
(26)27. Golden State (5-10) )
On back to back nights this week in games against Dallas (a win) and San Antonio (a loss), Monta Ellis played 92 of a possible 96 minutes hitting .574% of his shots while averaging 39.5 ppg. There are many things wrong with the Warriors he is obviously not one of them.
(29)28. Minnesota (2-15) )
Ryan Gomes scored 27 points Sunday night which was the most any T-Wolf player scored in a single game this season. The end result was a 106-100 victory in Denver.
(28)29. New York (3-14) )
The Knicks have lost 5 in a row and there does not appear to be any help walking through the doors of Madison Square Garden any time soon. The summer of 2010 could not come fast enough.
(30)30. New Jersey (0-17) )
The New Jersey Nets have a legit chance to go zero for the season. Lawrence Frank surely has to be thankful he will not be around.
