In this past year’s NBA Draft the league got another handful of talented young point guards that are making an immediate impact on their respective teams. Brandon Jennings, Johnny Flynn and Tyreke Evans are some of the names you are going to hear for years to come as they attempt to take their teams to the promise land. Some of the veterans are showing they still got it and that they are not planning on going anywhere any time soon, namely Steve Nash and Jason Kidd. With all the talent at point guard position in the NBA, I think it is good time to let you know, who the top 10 at the position are. Now I must warn you guys that some of the veterans are going to be ranked pretty low, although they are playing great and have done a lot over the years. Realistically they are not going to end their careers with a championship and championships are what define your career. Let’s get right in to it.
1. Chris Paul – New Orleans Hornets:
He is the best point guard in the NBA by a long shot. The only reason the New Orleans Hornets have appeared in the playoffs the last two years is because he persistently put his teammates in a good position to score. CP3 has also gotten better every year he has been in the league. Before his recent ankle injury, Paul was averaging 23.8 ppg, 9.2 apg while shooting an incredible .594 from the field and an even more incredible .655 from beyond the arc.
2. Deron Williams – Utah Jazz:
He brings it every night, and his size and quickness make him a match up nightmare for any opposing point guard. He is currently averaging 20.3 ppg and 9.8 apg but you got to wonder what his numbers would be like in a less restrictive offensive system.

3. Brandon Jennings – Milwaukee Bucks:
Some of you may think this is way too high for a rookie nine games into his career but I know a star when I see one. Jennings has all the tools; he is quick, a good decision maker with the ball in his hands, can shoot the lights out, plays gutsy defense and has the self belief to be a superstar. He is currently averaging 24.8 ppg and shooting .477% from the field and .558 from beyond the arc. Just nine games into the season and he is clearly the leader of the up start Milwaukee Bucks.
4. Steve Nash – Phoenix Suns:
Some of you may think this is way too low, but realistically Steve Nash is not winning an NBA championship. Not this year, not next year, not ever. I know the Suns are 10-3, but time and time again, it has been proven, you can not win a championship with that style of play. Defense wins championships, and Steve Nash is one of the worst defenders at his position. When you’re the best player on your team, and you don’t play D, guess what, nobody else on the team is going to play it either. Nash is this high though because his numbers can not be denied, he is averaging 17.2 ppg and 11.9 apg.
5. Chauncey Billups – Denver Nuggets:
He is the floor general for arguably the 2nd best team in the West. When Joe Dumars decided to pull the trigger and trade Billups for Iverson, he did it on the assumption that Billups had lost a step and that he can no longer get the Pistons over the hump. But that is exactly what Billups has done for the Nuggets. He led them to the Western Conference Finals after they lost in the 1st round the 5 previous seasons.
6. Tony Parker – San Antonio Spurs:
If the Spurs have any shot at beating the Lakers and returning to the finals, it will be on the back of Tony Parker. During last year’s playoffs he averaged 28.6 ppg and 6.8apg. He didn’t start the season where he left off and that is more than likely due to competing in the European Championships over the summer. I expect Tony to pick it up once he is healthy and rested.

7. Rajon Rondo – Boston Celtics:
I thought Rajon would be in the Top 5 of this list but he has not made an impact at all this season after last year’s playoffs when he averaged a near triple double going for 16.9 ppg 9.8 apg and 9.7 rpg. I assumed it would carry over into this season but it has not. Rondo is averaging 9 apg but he is only scoring 10.9 ppg and grabbing 3.0 rpg.
8. Gilbert Arenas – Washington Wizards:
Arenas has fully recovered from the knee surgery that forced him to miss 149 games over the last two years. Unfortunately, the Wizards haven’t adjusted well to Flip Saunders new offense and Gilbert Arenas is struggling with his jump shot as he is shooting just .396% from the field.
9. Jason Kidd – Dallas Mavericks:
Although he can no longer guard opposing point guards and plays a ton of minutes at the 2 guard spot, he is still one of the better floor leaders in the game at the age of 36. Against Brandon Jennings a few nights ago, Kidd showed the rook how it was done as he dished out 19 assists in a Dallas OT win.
10. Derrick Rose – Chicago Bulls:
Like Rondo, I was expecting Rose to make the leap to superstardom this season however his stats are down across the board in every major statistical category. Well I’m lying, his turnovers are up.

| Raps Fan | Nov 20 2009 10:18AM | While Jennings may be a star, I think you have him ranked a bit too high. Rose outplayed him earlier in the year at the end of the game (when performance really matters). I can live with making him 9, anything higher is pushing it. |
| Zoo | Nov 20 2009 10:43AM | Jennings will be terrific but absolutely no way he should be ranked 3rd after 9 NBA games... by this logic I am surprised Ty Lawson did not crack your top 10. |
| Charles | Nov 21 2009 12:31AM | I agree with most of this list but I'm very surprised Earl Watson is not on this list, particularly considering you're basing Jennings' inclusion only on his first nine games of his career while Watson has consistently put up very, very good stats throughout his career. It looks like down the road that Jennings may be more valuable, but right now while Watson is peaking I'll take Earl over him any day. |
| scoop | Nov 21 2009 6:52AM | Damn #3 after a few games!!! only at thebloopsforum.com!!! |
| magic mike | Nov 24 2009 7:47AM | did this dude say he's surprised that Earl Watson isn't on the list????? WTF#@!? |
| magic mike | Nov 24 2009 8:18AM | Devin Harris, Jameer Nelson, maybe not top 10 but knocking on the door. |
| Dino Gomez | Dec 2 2009 1:51PM | I would have Tony Parker in the 3 spot because he is proven... and B jennings at the 10 spot. Either way great list and great article!
