AROUND THE NBA
by Ron Campbell
1/18/12

I worked really late tonight and since I have crappy AT&T U-verse I don’t get replays of NBA league pass games. So I have to take it back to the old school and look at box scores. When I was a kid I didn’t have cable (internet hadn’t even been invented yet) so the only games I got to watch were the Celtics away games. My mother didn’t want us having cable because she wanted me and my brother and sisters to concentrate on our school work. Pretty savvy move by mom.

Warriors 105 Cavs 95
The first thing that jumps off the page with this one is Nate Robinson had 17 points and 10 assists off the bench. I actually questioned the Nate Robinson signing but he has proven to be an asset for the Warriors. The thing I love about Nate is that he is fearless; he plays with the heart of a lion. He was huge in the victory over Miami last week.

The next thing that really jumps out is that David Lee took 20 shots to Monta Ellis’s 12. Monta this year seems like a completely different player he trusts his teammates. He is still averaging 20 shot attempts but it is more in the flow of the game.

Ricky Rubio is my favorite rookie but if I had a vote I would have to give it to Kyrie Irving simply because if the season ended today the Cavs would be an eighth seed.

Bobcats 89 Magic 96
Jameer Nelson had 17 points which is surprising because he is having an awful season. He is shooting 42% from the field 29% from three, both career lows, and he is averaging a career low 7.9 points per game.

Byron Mullens who is having a breakout year looks like he had his hands full with Dwight Howard. Dwight had 25 and 17 to Mullens 8 and 4 eww (Nicki Minaj voice).

Spurs 98 Miami 120
Whoa Mike Miller 6-6 from three in 15 minutes. The Heat must be happy they didn’t amnesty him. You know the old saying two’s company three’s a crowd. I am really beginning to seriously doubt whether the Heat can win a championship. I don’t think the Heat’s big three understands their roles especially when they all play. The beauty of scanning the boxscores in 2012 is that a few clicks and I get to examine the game logs and early in the season Dwayne Wade missed three games and the Heat won every game. He came back for the West Coast trip and they lost all three. Wade was out last night the Heat win. This is a very alarming statistic.

Suns 97 Bulls 118
Nothing really caught my eye looking at this box score except for the fact the the entire Suns team had negative plus/minus except for Ronnie Price. Immediately you say well he probably played like a minute but not true he played 18, not really sure what this means but I am going to monitor this situation over the coming weeks.

Pistons 80 Rockets 97
Greg Monroe four points in 37 minutes, he is a rising star he is going to have nights like that. It looks like the Pistons have decided to go with Brandon Knight as the starting point guard. The Rodney Stuckey point guard experiment is over. Remember a few years ago when Rodney Stuckey’s name was just ringing out. Joe Dumars had us thinking he was the next, well, Joe Dumars.

Nuggets 105 Bucks 95
Corey Brewer 22 points off the bench. I really wanted the Celtics to get this guy. I thought he would have been perfect for our system as an energy guy off the bench who would play Celtic defense.

Brandon Jennings had 30 points. Jennings is having a pretty good season he is shooting a career high 43% from the field. I know what you are thinking that is kind of terrible but his rookie year he shot 37% from the field and his second year he shot 39%. You want to know what happened to Jennings he had that 55 point game as a rookie and then he literally played bad for two years following and now he is finally coming along.

Clippers 79 Jazz 108
The Clippers were without Chris Paul who pulled his hamstring balling out of control against the Lakers on Saturday night. Clips shot 37% from the field without CP3.

I was discussing Blake Griffin with the forum family on Saturday and surprisingly we all came to a consensus that Blake is a bit of a fake. ESPN did that poll over the summer and they ranked Blake #11 which was pretty ridiculous. Fake, I mean Blake has no low post moves, an inconsistent jumper and just flat out plays stupid sometimes.

Some guy named Courtney Fortson scored 13 for the Clippers off the bench. I kind of did a double take because I thought it read Danny Fortson. I have no idea who Courtney Fortson is.

The Jazz are for real they are 9-4 and 7-1 at home.
