No Rondo No Medal
By Ron Campbell
8/24/10

On Tuesday August 24, 2010 Rajon Rondo withdrew his name from consideration to compete for TEAM USA in the World Championship in Turkey. On Sunday versus Spain’s national team Rajon Rondo surprisingly didn’t play a single minute in the game after starting the two previous games. Rick Kamla and Steve Smith hinted at the fact that maybe Coach Mike Krzyzewski wanted to take a longer look at Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook as those two appeared to be the players on the bubble.

Not playing Rajon Rondo on Sunday was a very poor decision by Coach K. Yes team USA got off to a better start with Derrick Rose starting at the point but I would attribute that to Kevin Durant having a good start to the game. By alienating Rondo, Coach K effectively got rid of the team's best all around player, best defender and the only true point guard on the team.

Rajon Rondo is not the best shooter, we know that however he does find ways to score and make plays. Where team USA will miss Rondo the most is on the defensive end of the floor. Rondo's ability to pressure inferior ball handlers with his freakishly long arms would have proven to be invaluable asset to Team USA's transition game. During a stretch against Lithuania Rondo had consecutive steals and deflection that allowed his teammate to get a steal in the second half. Team USA will also miss Rondo's rebounding prowess, remember Rondo recorded an 18 rebound game during the playoffs. Easy buckets will be few and far in with Chauncey Billups and Derrick Rose dominating the basketball, both players are shoot first point guards where as Rondo is a pass first guard. Against Spain Team USA had 13 assists for its 33 made field goals which means team USA didn't get to many easy baskets.

Bottom line Coach K is fraud he hasn't done anything notable in his years of coaching Team USA other than being a terrific assistant coach to Kobe Bryant and Jason Kidd in the 2008 Olympics. When things get tough Coach K won't make any adjustments he will just sit there looking like a scared little boy like he did against Greece in the 2006 World Championships. I remember it like it was this morning, Greece took control of the game in the second half by gaining a ten point advantage against the USA. During the entire stretch that lead to a loss, Coach K did not call any time outs. Greece ran the same high screen and roll from the top of the key maybe 15 consecutive trips down the floor. Coach K, did not call a timeout or make a defensive adjustment. He just sat there staring while team USA totally collapsed. Speaking of Kobe and Kidd, this current team’s version of Kobe and Kidd are Chauncey Billups aka "Mr. Big Shot" more like "Mr. I have never seen a shot I didn't like" and Lamar Odom. Expect a lot of ill-advised shots from Billups and expect Lamar Odom to be abused at the center spot like he was Sunday against Marc Gasol.

Billups and Odom have championship experience but so doesn't Rondo who has appeared in two out of three previous NBA Finals. Kevin Love, Eric Gordon, Rudy Gay and Stephen Curry have never even played in the playoffs. Derrick Rose, Andre Igoudala, Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Danny Granger have never gotten out of the first round. Tyson Chandler can't really be relied on as he missed 68 games in the last two seasons and without a point guard creating opportunities for him he is completely inept on the offensive end.

The message from Coach K was very clear on Sunday he expects to win the World Championships with one-on-one, hero basketball.
