BIG FISH IN A LITTLE BIG 12 POND
By Ron Campbell

Prior to being drafted number two overall by the Philadelphia 76ers, Evan Turner was being compared to everyone from Oscar Robertson to Brandon Roy after putting up eye popping numbers at Ohio State. Turner's junior numbers of 20-9-6 had coaches, scouts and fans salivating over the prospect. Everyone and their grandmother was excited about Turner's future in NBA except for one guy, me!

Call me hater but I was never sold on Evan Turner. I even went as far as tweeting Evan Turner is a slightly better Boris Diaw and that he may never appear in an all-star game. Granted Turner's numbers were off the charts in college but I saw holes in his game that wouldn't translate well into the NBA game. For one Turner lacked athleticism and I felt he would and will have a difficult time defending some the NBA's faster more athletic small forwards such as Carmelo Anthony, Gerald Wallace, and Caron Butler etc. Evan is also not a superior ball handler, he is a very good passer but his ball handling appeared shaky at best but what bothers me most about Turner was his tournament. Again Turner put up big numbers 64 points in three games but he shot 20-52FGM-A from the field, 19 assists to go along with 19 turnovers. In three summer league games Turner is averaging a mere 9.7ppg which I am sure has to be disappointing to the entire Sixers organization.

Turner may one day be a decent player in NBA but I don't think it will be with the 76ers. Turner is the type of player who needs the ball in his hands to be effective and with Jrue Holiday, Louis Williams and Andre Igoudola he is not going to have the ball as much as he did at Ohio State so Turner is going to have to learn how to be a glue guy. For Turner to be successful he is going to have to be the guy who comes in off the bench and fills his teams needs, whether its rebounding, scoring, etc. Or I could be totally wrong and Turner ends up finding his way and becomes a perennial all-star but I am pretty sure that will only happen in his dreams.
