Christmas Hoops

By Zoo
I have a conscience and lately my conscience has been bothering me, I guess I feel a bit guilty about my constant dissing of Kevin McHale for trading Brandon Roy for Randy Foye and then trading OJ Mayo for Kevin Love on draft night granted the Wolves also received Mike Miller in the deal, I just feel, well I know, OJ will be the better player. I am from Boston and Kevin McHale was one of the first NBA stars I grew to love, so in his defense I have decided to watch a Minnesota game from start to finish something even with NBA league pass I have been unable to do.

So I sat down and watched the Wolves play the Grizzlies (my favorite team that has no chance of making the playoffs) the game was very entertaining and Kevin Love played great basketball, Love finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds. But something was bothering me the entire time I was watching this game and I really couldn't put my finger on it then it dawned on me, every player on Minnesota is playing out of position or is being under utilized for some reason or another. Let’s take a look at every player and you will see what I am talking about.

OUT OF POSITION

Al Jefferson is the starting center and he is not a center, he is listed at 6-10 but I have stood next to Jefferson at night club in Massachusetts and he is at best 6-9 granted I didn't measure Jefferson but I remember a night out with the boys in ATL and Dikembe Mutombo a true 7 footer walked by me and he was much taller than Jefferson. If you want some more proof just look at Jefferson when he stands next to McHale during a timeout, McHale is taller. Jefferson would be better suited playing alongside a real center.

Craig Smith at 6'7' is the starting power forward, problem with Smith is he should be the starting tight end for the Vikings.

Ryan Gomes 6'7' starting power forward, yes both Gomes and Smith start and both are listed as PF, Ryan Gomes is a power forward in a small forward's body and frankly can't bang with other big men and isn't athletic enough to stay with superior small forwards in the league.

Randy Foye is a shooting guard who in his third year is still learning how to play the point guard position, Foye looks so much more comfortable looking for his own shot then he does setting up his teammates.

Kevin Ollie is starting but he really shouldn't, their season is over let Rashard McCants start at shooting guard and continue to develop. Ollie should ome off the bench but......

Rashard McCants doesn't do anything other than score. For his career he only averages 1.1apg and 2.0 rebounds and when a guy is only a scorer he is best utilized coming off the bench. So I will actually give the wolves a pass on this one, Rashard McCants needs to add more to his game if he ever wants to be a player in the league.

UNDER UTILIZIED

Sebastian Telfair has garnered interest from a few teams this season and I can see why, Telfair is Minnesota's best point guard but management has decided to allow Foye to develop in hopes that one day the trade for Foye for Roy doesn't seem so lopsided.

Kevin Love should be playing 35-38 minutes a night and continue working on improving his game instead of the mere 22.8 minutes he is receiving now. Also we all have seen Love make shots from the other end of the court, he shot .354 from the three point line in college but yet Love has only attempted 11 three pointers attempts this season, I think Mchale may be wanting to mold Love in his own image. Instead of pick and rolls with Love why don't they try pick and pop out. Love's ability hit the jump shots can stretch the defense and open lanes for penetration, Love is a terrific player his growth is being stunted in Minny. But Love does need to get stronger; he seems to have trouble getting position in the post.

Now I realize that Corey Brewer is out for the season and Mike Miller is currently out with an ankle injury but I really liked Brewer coming out of Florida but after watching him this summer play in the Vegas summer league I gave up on him. Corey Brewer was simply awful, what made it worse was that guys like OJ Mayo, Kevin Love and Jerryd Bayless dominated summer league, before ever playing an NBA game. Mike Miller is nice and should be able to help them when he returns.

The Wolves played the Mavs in Dallas last night. At halftime the Wolves were up 22, at one point during the second half the Wolves were up 70 to 41. The Mavs went on a 66 to 30 run to end the game and got the win 100 to 107, biggest comeback in Mavs history.

Stu Parkerwow. after reading this blog....You are spot on. I do not deny Kevin Garnett's ability as a player but HATE the BS stuff he does...All negative crap.
This is a very unfair article. Garnett is an Olympic Gold Medalist, an MVP, an ALL STAR MVP, an ALL NBA member and an NBA Champion... you know how many current players can say that? 2 others (Shaq & Kobe) and they are all considered among the best players at their respected positions in the HISTORY of basketball. The same should be said for K.G.

RaThis is blasphemy. I hope a Celtics fan did not write this article.
KWAPTHow old is that clip of KG? C'mon..of course that was a punk move, but what was that, 10 years ago? It's simple: KG is a fierce competitor who uses intimiadation and mental toughness to strike fear in the heart of his opponents. If he is on your team, you LOVE him. If he is not, you may loathe him. But either way, he is a great player. You cannot deny that.
AlexWow, now we are going to call an Olympic Gold Medalist, an MVP, an ALL STAR MVP, an ALL NBA member, an NBA Champion, a player that has more 20-10-5 seasons than Larry Bird, Defender of the Year (2008 and most likely, this year) overrated? Hmm, right now I'm kind of smelling a bit of jealousy mixed with stupidity in this article.
TweedsterThis blog is poorly written, scattered and incoherent. Thankfully, someone else already tackled the inconsistencies and leaps of logic. Check it out hear: http://celticshub.com/2009/10/22/did-you-hear-kg-is-overrated/
TweedsterSome actual statistics, and not just conjecture and strange conclusions based on the number of 'chips KG has. http://www.celticstown.com/is-kevin-garnett-clutch.html
SPron campbell must love the Lakers. Or the Cav's. Or the Magic. but he doesn't know @$@@ about basketball!
Ed The Sports FanI'm sorry, there's no way in life Allen Iverson isn't in the starting 5, especially ahead of Nash. Give a damn about MVP's, Iverson's done more with much much MUCH less and totally revolutionized the game. Other than that, I think your decade team is cool. -Ed.
Lebron is the KingThe way you analyzed your stats is flawed. If your saying Bird is better because he hits more 3 pointers, scores more, and passes more, your wrong. Bird had exceptional teammates which explains some assists. Now Bird was a great 3 point shooter and you said Duncan was a "center playing a power forward". Now if he does this, why would you bash it? All it shows is how versatile Duncan is in his position on the court. Duncan although not a flashy player, showed dominance under the goal. Duncan didnt need to pass because he could school anyone under the goal. Duncan is better because he has more rings. End of story. And to your comment on "We will never see another Larry Bird." Well we see a better one now, he goes by Ray Ray.
