Whose Your MVP

By Godfather 3/13/2009
The Race for MVP has heated up in recent weeks. At mid season, it was a two man race between Kobe Bryant and LeBron James however as of late, Dwayne Wade has really turned it on and it is now a race between LeBron and Wade.

In my opinion, there is only one player that should be considered for MVP, and that is the current reigning MVP, Kobe Bryant. Wade and LeBron’s numbers will wow you, but you have to understand the offensive make ups of their respective teams. Neither LeBron or Wade play with a true point guard that can direct the offense, which forces LeBron and Wade to have to take on the responsibility of running the offense and setting up their teammates. The Lakers on the other hand do have a true point guard in Derek Fisher and run an offense based on passing and cutting which would be why Wade and LeBron both have better assist numbers.

Wade and LeBron have the luxury of not playing with a solid second and third option. After LeBron, the Cavs are relaying on a streaky shooter in Moe Williams and Big Z who is still effective but way past his prime. Wade on the other hand has to look to rookies Mike Beasley and Chalmers for some offense while the washed up Jermaine O’Neal is still figuring out his role in the offense. This forces Wade and LeBron to have more opportunities on the offensive end, which results in a higher scoring average.

Kobe on the other hand has a reliable second, third and when Bynum is back in the lineup fourth option on offense, which reduces Kobe offensive opportunities but allows the rest of the Lakers to be in rhythm. Kobe doesn’t have to dominate the ball they way LeBron and Wade have to.

I’m kind of contradicting myself here, judging by the two previous paragraphs, it is obvious Wade and LeBron are more important to their teams. However, here is where Kobe standouts. The NBA season is a long 82 games, but some games have a lot more meaning then others, and this year Kobe has won the majority of them.

First big test for the Lakers was against the Boston Celtics who were sporting a 19 game win streak on Christmas Day before they were defeated in LA on national television. That game ended with the defense collapsing on Kobe and Kobe finding his teammates, specifically Pau Gasol and Josh Powell for wide open shots. Not only did Kobe trust his teammates, but he instilled confidence in them as well which is key during tight playoff games.

Three weeks later, Kobe dislocates in his ring finger on his shooting in the first quarter against the Cleveland Cavaliers. For many of the leagues so called superstars, that would have been enough to shut it down for the evening. With Kobe, no, he simply led the Lakers to a 17 point win scoring 20 points dishing out 12 assists and grabbing 6 rebounds. He also held Lebron to 9-25 shooting.

Another three weeks later, Kobe was in Boston for the Christmas day rematch. This time the Celtics were sporting a 12 game win streak and the Lakers were dealing with the loss of Andrew Bynum. With the game slipping away from the Lakers in the fourth, Kobe hit three critical threes to keep the Lakers alive who eventually won in overtime. That win pretty much put the Lakers into the driver’s seat for home court and mental edge if the team’s meet again in the Finals.

Lakers swept the season series against the Celtics and Cavs, the top two teams in the Eastern conference. Against the Spurs this year, the Lakers are 2-1 with the only loss being a one point loss on a retarded Roger Mason three point play. Against the Magic, the Lakers are 0-2 but at the end of the day, the likelihood of the Lakers meeting the Magic in the finals is unlikely. Against the Houston Rockets, the Lakers are currently 3-0.

The teams mentioned above are the top 5 teams in the NBA other then the Lakers. Lakers record against these teams is 9-3. That is a 75% winning percentage against the NBA’s best. I’m old fashion, I still believe the best player on the best team is the MVP. Dwayne Wade has a case, but at the end of the day, the Heat have 29 losses and won’t even have home court advantage in the first round. LeBron is unbelievable, but his record against the NBA’s best is not as stellar as Kobe. Kobe gets my vote for MVP, and he should get yours as well.

Stu Parkerwow. after reading this blog....You are spot on. I do not deny Kevin Garnett's ability as a player but HATE the BS stuff he does...All negative crap.
This is a very unfair article. Garnett is an Olympic Gold Medalist, an MVP, an ALL STAR MVP, an ALL NBA member and an NBA Champion... you know how many current players can say that? 2 others (Shaq & Kobe) and they are all considered among the best players at their respected positions in the HISTORY of basketball. The same should be said for K.G.

RaThis is blasphemy. I hope a Celtics fan did not write this article.
KWAPTHow old is that clip of KG? C'mon..of course that was a punk move, but what was that, 10 years ago? It's simple: KG is a fierce competitor who uses intimiadation and mental toughness to strike fear in the heart of his opponents. If he is on your team, you LOVE him. If he is not, you may loathe him. But either way, he is a great player. You cannot deny that.
AlexWow, now we are going to call an Olympic Gold Medalist, an MVP, an ALL STAR MVP, an ALL NBA member, an NBA Champion, a player that has more 20-10-5 seasons than Larry Bird, Defender of the Year (2008 and most likely, this year) overrated? Hmm, right now I'm kind of smelling a bit of jealousy mixed with stupidity in this article.
TweedsterThis blog is poorly written, scattered and incoherent. Thankfully, someone else already tackled the inconsistencies and leaps of logic. Check it out hear: http://celticshub.com/2009/10/22/did-you-hear-kg-is-overrated/
TweedsterSome actual statistics, and not just conjecture and strange conclusions based on the number of 'chips KG has. http://www.celticstown.com/is-kevin-garnett-clutch.html
SPron campbell must love the Lakers. Or the Cav's. Or the Magic. but he doesn't know @$@@ about basketball!
Ed The Sports FanI'm sorry, there's no way in life Allen Iverson isn't in the starting 5, especially ahead of Nash. Give a damn about MVP's, Iverson's done more with much much MUCH less and totally revolutionized the game. Other than that, I think your decade team is cool. -Ed.
Lebron is the KingThe way you analyzed your stats is flawed. If your saying Bird is better because he hits more 3 pointers, scores more, and passes more, your wrong. Bird had exceptional teammates which explains some assists. Now Bird was a great 3 point shooter and you said Duncan was a "center playing a power forward". Now if he does this, why would you bash it? All it shows is how versatile Duncan is in his position on the court. Duncan although not a flashy player, showed dominance under the goal. Duncan didnt need to pass because he could school anyone under the goal. Duncan is better because he has more rings. End of story. And to your comment on "We will never see another Larry Bird." Well we see a better one now, he goes by Ray Ray.
