Overrated
I have been watching the NBA with regularity for the last 18 years. Over the
years I have seen several stars come and go from O.J. Mayo to Larry Bird and
Derrick Rose to Magic. By now I have figured out which players can possibly lead
a team to the championship or even at least the NBA Finals. For some reason, I
swear, the majority of the media still does not understand exactly what it takes
to win an NBA championship. Several players are considered superstars, but I'm
going to let you in on a little secret, they will never get it done for their
organization. As far as I'm concerned, the next few championships will come down
to L.A., Boston, Cleveland or Orlando. Here is a list of players that are
masquerading as Championship level players.
1. Chris Bosh:
Scottie Pippen said it best when referring to Charles Barkley back when they
were teammates on the Houston Rockets. Just because you score a lot of points
and grab a lot of rebounds, doesn't mean you are doing everything for your team
to win. You hear that Chris? It was recently reported that Chris Bosh publicly
called Jemario Moon out for his poor defense late in a game and then called out
the entire team for their lack of urgency on the defensive end. Well Chris Bosh
is no candidate for the All Defensive team either and he is the team’s leader and
best player. What Bosh needs to do is study tape of Tim Duncan and K.G. On
Monday night Tim Duncan's Spurs escaped Charlotte with a 2 point win after Tim
Duncan blocked a Raymond Felton's game tying shot attempt. Although I think K.G.
is a little overrated, his defense is not. He is super intense when guarding
players, tries to block as many shot as possible even if it results in a
goal tend and often screams and yells on the defensive end just to get into the
heads of other players. These are things Chris Bosh does not do. When they say
K.G. changed the culture of the Celtics, he got all the Celtics amped up because
his antics on the defensive end was contagious because he leads by example. Now
if Chris Bosh made the same commitment on defense, maybe his teammates would
follow suit. I guess Chris Bosh thinks yelling and public embarrassment works
better. I wonder what he will wear for the NBA Draft Lottery in April.
2. Brandon Roy:
I watched Brandon Roy very closely Wednesday night in his match up with LeBron
James, and I must say I'm impressed. The kid has the heart of Lion, but he
doesn't have the game to match. Other then his first step, there is nothing even
remotely athletic about this guy. He reminds me very much of Chauncey Billups.
He missed like 5 or 6 lay-ups in the fourth quarter. The reason he was taking so
many drives to the basket is because he cannot make a jumper off the dribble. He
has no step back jumper at all either. He is a point guard, being forced to play
the two. Also, we have all seen the commitments made by Wade, LeBron and Kobe on
the defensive end. All three should be on the all-defensive team this season.
When Roy attempted to put the clamps on LeBron last night, King James was able
to run right by him. On one sequence they sent a second defender at LeBron to
assist Roy and LeBron just ran circles around them for a left handed scoop lay up.
With such poor defense and many holes on offense, I cannot imagine a scenario in
which Brandon Roy leads his team to a championship. Not to mention, if Portland
does manage to make the Finals, again I can't even imagine Roy getting the best
of LeBron or Wade in a series. Portland should have drafted Durant 2 years ago.
3. Michael Redd:
Michael Redd is so one -dimensional, it is really a mystery why the Bucks insist
on building around him. He has improved his defense and opened up his offense,
but he still is not a player that can impose his will. I guess the thought was
that Redd would have the same impact as Ray Allen had, but Ray is a much more
complete player and capable of imposing his will. As the Bucks are constructed
now, they are good enough to fight for the 8th seed and get swept in the first
round. The Bucks need another big or slasher on the wing.

| Stu Parker | wow. after reading this blog....You are spot on. I do not deny Kevin Garnett's ability as a player but HATE the BS stuff he does...All negative crap. |
| | This is a very unfair article. Garnett is an Olympic Gold Medalist, an MVP, an ALL STAR MVP, an ALL NBA member and an NBA Champion... you know how many current players can say that? 2 others (Shaq & Kobe) and they are all considered among the best players at their respected positions in the HISTORY of basketball. The same should be said for K.G. |

| Ra | This is blasphemy. I hope a Celtics fan did not write this article. |
| KWAPT | How old is that clip of KG? C'mon..of course that was a punk move, but what was that, 10 years ago? It's simple: KG is a fierce competitor who uses intimiadation and mental toughness to strike fear in the heart of his opponents. If he is on your team, you LOVE him. If he is not, you may loathe him. But either way, he is a great player. You cannot deny that. |
| Alex | Wow, now we are going to call an Olympic Gold Medalist, an MVP, an ALL STAR MVP, an ALL NBA member, an NBA Champion, a player that has more 20-10-5 seasons than Larry Bird, Defender of the Year (2008 and most likely, this year) overrated? Hmm, right now I'm kind of smelling a bit of jealousy mixed with stupidity in this article. |
| Tweedster | This blog is poorly written, scattered and incoherent. Thankfully, someone else already tackled the inconsistencies and leaps of logic. Check it out hear:

| Tweedster | Some actual statistics, and not just conjecture and strange conclusions based on the number of 'chips KG has.

| SP | ron campbell must love the Lakers. Or the Cav's. Or the Magic. but he doesn't know @$@@ about basketball! |
| Ed The Sports Fan | I'm sorry, there's no way in life Allen Iverson isn't in the starting 5, especially ahead of Nash. Give a damn about MVP's, Iverson's done more with much much MUCH less and totally revolutionized the game. Other than that, I think your decade team is cool.
