Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that it will return to Mississippi with an expansion team this season. According to Joe Newman, "We had a great operation there prior to Hurricane Katrina; it has taken a couple of years to get back and we are pleased to be there. We have a great new ownership group, young, with a basketball background, a business background and a lot of energy in Daniel and Demarcus Price."
Daniel Price is CEO/President of Price Management Group and works with his younger brother, Demarcus who will serve as Vice President. "The Blues are truly a hometown venture and a family affair," said Demarcus. "We love the state of Mississippi and are excited about the opportunity to bring ABA basketball back to the state."
Daniel is not just a regular person starting a basketball team without any experience. He started playing at the local YMCA when he was five years old and has never left the court in some form or the other. His high school career was impressive while playing at Wingfield High School in Jackson, MS. His senior year he averaged 21 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists and began his college career at Howard College in Big Spring TX where he helped his team go 23-0 before losing their first game. The team was ranked 2nd in the nation.
After graduation from Howard, he signed with NAIA D1 Pikeville College and helped lead the Bears to a national tournament appearance. During his senior year, he led the team in scoring with 18 points as well as field goal percentage, steals and free throw percentage and was ranked 3rd in the nation in steals throughout his senior season helping him make 1st Team All Conference. After college, he played professionally with the Cleveland Majic and also played in the CBA. He is CEO and founder of the Mississippi Basketball Exposure League.
Demarcus is a 2002 graduate of Clinton High School where he was a member of the national champions Attache. He attended Mississippi Delta Community College and was named Mr. MDCC, Captain of the Ambassadors, MDCC Hall of Fame and won the Departmental Award for the Social Sciences while maintaining a 3.8 GPA.
"Being in the Mississippi Delta, I was able to see the wonderful spectrum of Mississippi life and culture. As a performer, I was able to travel all over the US and it was during these travels I found that Mississippi was one of the few places where when one person succeeds the entire state succeeds," said Demarcus. "From watching my brother Daniel play, I have always dreamed of owning a professional sports team and I knew that I could not fulfill my dream anywhere but Mississippi. We are pleased and proud to be part of the ABA."
